In-State Standout Philip Johnson Gives Wolfpack Another Verbal For 2028
NEW COMMIT: North Carolina State University has received its second public verbal commitment for Fall 2028 from in-state standout Philip Johnson of Gastonia, North Carolina. Johnson excels in breaststroke and is a Junior National qualifier.
He will join Jaden Mills in Raleigh as a member of the Wolfpack’s Class of 2032.
Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I’m incredibly honored and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at NC State University! I want to thank my family, Coach Trey, Coach Greg, my teammates, and everyone who has supported me throughout my swimming journey. A huge thank you to Coach Braden and the NC State staff for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing program. I’m very excited for what the future holds and proud to say GO PACK!”
Johnson trains year-round with Gaston Gators and most recently competed at Junior Nationals where he finaled in the 50m breast and 100m breast. A month earlier, he had a fantastic showing at North Carolina Long Course Seniors where he earned best times in all of his events with four top-4 finishes. He was also a six-time finalist at North Carolina Short Course Seniors in December.
His best times include:
- 100 breast – 56.32
- 200 breast – 2:02.99
- 50 free – 20.81
Currently a junior at East Gaston High School, Johnson won the 100 breast and 200 IM at the 2026 North Carolina 4A State Championships. He placed ninth in the 50 free at the 1A/2A state meet as a freshman in 2025.
NC State finished sixth at the 2026 NCAA Championships after placing third at the 2026 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
