Duke Cruises to Wins in Season Opener at Davidson

The Duke Blue Devils opened their season with a visit to in-state opponent Davidson. The Blue Devil women won every event on the way to a 246.5-53.5 victory, while the men’s score was a bit closer, with Duke coming out on top 193-106.

Duke’s women dominated the 200 medley relay in 1:42.54 with Ali Pfaff, Reese Reilly, Heather White and Riley Anderson. Pfaff was victorious in the 100 backstroke (54.36) before Reese topped the 100 breaststroke (1:04.01). Anderson topped the 50 freestyle (23.65) and 100 butterfly (55.08), and the 100 free went to White in 50.79. Later, Pfaff added a second win in the 200 back (1:59.31), and Reese doubled up in the 200 breast (2:18.73)

Neala Klein placed first in the 1000 free (10:23.84) and 200 butterfly (2:06.13) while Quinn White won the 200 free (1:52.27) and 500 free (5:02.05). Diver Kiera Lu cam in first in 1-meter (319.88) and 3-meter (352.35). Gracyn Kehoe was the winner of the 200 IM (2:06.44), and the team of Anderson, White, Clare Logan and Pfaff dominated the 400 free relay (3:24.98).

The Duke men opened with a win in the 200 medley relay, with Ethan Bathala, Jack Smith, Yavuz Omer Aga and Milo Shue combining for a time of 1:31.41. Ryan Griffith had Duke’s first individual win in the 200 free (1:42.27), followed by Bathala winning the 100 back (50.59) and Smith topping the 100 breast (56.71). Shue topped the field by more than eight tenths in the 50 free (20.53), and in diving, Charlie Berman placed first on 3-meter (370.20) and 1-meter (325.50).

In the 100 free, Griffith earned his second win while tying with teammate Owen Waibel at 46.91. Raphael Wang claimed first in the 200 breast (2:03.19), with Aga coming in first in the 100 fly (50.48). Charlie Zuhoski wrapped up individual events with his dominant swim in the 200 IM (1:52.86), and the meet concluded with Shue, Waibel, Griffith and Charlie Kulp winning the 400 free relay in 3:04.31.

Davidson’s Henry Shoemaker scored wins in the 1000 free (9:32.33) and 500 free (4:36.25). Grady Gospodarek led the way in the 200 fly (1:52.67), and Elliott Darr won the 200 back (1:51.42).
