Nebraska, Led By Gena Jorgensen, Takes Down Illinois in Midwest Duel
The Nebraska Cornhuskers women fought towards a 174.5-125.5 victory over the Fighting Illini of Illinois, improving to 6-2.
Nebraska’s Gena Jorgensen led the way with 3 individual wins. The Junior began with an assertive win in the 1000 freestyle in 9:43.79, starting the meet strong. She would then go on to win both the 200 back (1:58.09) and the 400 IM (4:15.33).
The Illini put up a fight however, especially due to the efforts of senior Sydney Stoll. Stoll won the 200 free in 1:47.54, showing her versatility by also winning the 100 free (49.86) and 100 fly (53.97).
Nebraska had a handle on the meet’s early stroke events, giving them a quick advantage. The team won the 200 medley relay handily, with a team of Anna Vlachou, Jojo Randby, Beatrix Tanko and Maisie Gilford putting down a strong 1:39.79. Virginia Consiglio then won the 100 back (54.09), while Randby edged out teammate Maia Hall for a win in the 100 breast (1:01.26). Hall would get her own win however, taking home the 200 breast in 2:13.30.
Catherine Bisiacchi won the 200 fly (2:01.50) and Gilford the 50 free (23.01), giving the Huskers a big first half lead.
Liv Dorshorst won the 500 free (4:54.99), squeaking by Bisiacchi. But the Huskers’ lead was already too much to overcome, padded by a strong finish in the 400 free relay. A team of Tanko, Randby, Giulia Marchi and Gilford got the win in 3:21.15.
Abigail Baxter won both the 1m and 3m diving, with scores of 297.00 and 319.20, respectively.
