Maryland State Champion Leopold Nurit Sends 2028 Verbal to Michigan

NEW COMMIT: The University of Michigan has scored a new verbal commitment for the 2028-29 season and beyond from Bethesda, Md. native Leopold Nurit. Nurit is a distance freestyler and Summer Nationals qualifier.

He will join Max Garbacz in Ann Arbor as a member of the Wolverines’ Class of 2032.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I’m beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at University of Michigan! I’m forever grateful to Coach Bowe and Coach Bell for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. I want to especially thank my amazing NCAP coaches, Bruce Gemmell and Coach Dory Halbe for guiding me these past few years, I would not be here without their support and care. I also want to give a big thank you to all my other coaches over the years, every one of them have also been an important part of my journey of growing as both a person, and athlete. Finally, thank you to my parents, my family and friends who have supported me relentlessly on this journey. I love you all! Go Blue!”

Nurit trains year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club and raced four events at Summer Nationals after winning the 400m IM at Potomac Valley Long Course Seniors this past summer. Last winter, he finished third in the 1000 free, fourth in the mile and seventh in the 500 free at the NCAP Katie Ledecky Invitational. Nurit later took fifth in the mile, sixth in the 1000 free and 10th in the 500 free at NCSA Spring Championships.

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:27.12
  • 1000 free – 9:01.45
  • 1650 free – 15:13.75
  • 400 IM – 3:56.57

Currently a junior at Walt Whitman High School, Nurit won the 500 free and took eighth in the 200 free at the 2026 Maryland 4A/3A State Championships. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American earned bronze in the 500 free at the state meet as a freshman in 2024.

Michigan placed second at the 2026 Big Ten Championships and eighth at the 2026 NCAA Championships.
