Virginia’s Todd DeSorbo Named ASCA George Haines Coach of the Year
University of Virginia coach Todd DeSorbo has been named the ASCA George Haines Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. The announcement was made Friday as part of the organization’s World Clinic and recognizes DeSorbo for his contributions toward the success of American swimming on the international stage. The award was first presented in 1961 and is named after George Haines, a legendary Hall of Fame coach.
On the college scene, DeSorbo guided Virginia to a sixth consecutive women’s title at the NCAA Championships, the Cavaliers earning their latest crown in dominant fashion. Beyond the collegiate campaign, DeSorbo guided multiple athletes to success in global competitions, headlined by Kate Douglass breaking the world record on multiple occasions in the 50-meter freestyle. Douglass also set an American record in the 100 freestyle, a standard previously held by UVA’s Anna Moesch, who DeSorbo led to her top season ever.
DeSorbo continued to help Gretchen Walsh dominate the 100 butterfly, as Walsh broke her own world record in the event and built a resume that features the 18-fastest performances in history. Meanwhile, Alex Walsh and Claire Curzan earned medals at the Pan Pacific Championships under DeSorbo’s tutelage.
