Michigan Adds 2028 Verbal From New York State Champion Una Diaz

NEW COMMIT: The University of Michigan has added another verbal commitment for the 2028-29 season and beyond, this time from Una Diaz of Long Beach, N.Y. Diaz is a Summer Nationals qualifier who excels in distance freestyle, backstroke and IM.

She will join Bobbi Simmons, Yari Brock, Elsa Anderson and Feagin Kaminski in Ann Arbor as a member of the Wolverines’ Class of 2032.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am stoked to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan! I would like to thank my family, friends, and club coaches, Ginny and Dave, who have supported me since the beginning. I would also like to thank Coach Aaron, Coach Matt, and the rest of the coaching staff at Michigan. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and excited to be a part of this program. Go Blue!! 〽️”

Diaz, who trains year-round with Long Island Aquatic Club, placed fifth in the 1500m free, sixth in the 400m IM and seventh in the 800m free at Junior Nationals this past summer. That was after she earned two best times at Summer Nationals and produced five top-6 finishes at Metropolitan Long Course Seniors.

Last winter, Diaz finished eighth in the 800m free and 12th in the 400m IM at the Toyota U.S. Open. She then earned silver in the 1000 free and bronze in the 400 IM at the NCAP Katie Ledecky Invitational. Diaz finished eighth in the 200 back, ninth in the 400 IM and 10th in the 500 free at NCSA Spring Championships.

Her best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:48.69
  • 1000 free – 9:49.32
  • 1650 free – 16:48.64
  • 100 back – 54.46
  • 200 back – 1:55.83
  • 200 IM – 2:00.28
  • 400 IM – 4:14.32

Currently a junior at Long Beach High School, Diaz won the 200 IM and was the runner-up in the 100 back at the 2026 NYSPHSAA State Championships, also taking second in the 4×50 medley and 4×100 free relays. She finished fourth in the 100 back and 200 IM as a freshman in 2024.

Michigan won the 2026 Big Ten Championships, its first conference title since 2018 and its 18th conference crown all-time. The Wolverines then finished sixth at the 2026 NCAA Championships.

Diaz’s best times would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200 back at last year’s conference meet, as well as the C-final of the 200 IM, 400 IM, 500 free, plus placed in the top-22 of the mile.
