Junior Pan Pacs, Night Two Finals: Raito Numata Blazes to Title in 400 IM
Japan’s firepower in the 400-meter individual medley is impressive, led by reigning Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita, and it got even better on the second night of the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver. En route to a dominant victory, Raito Numata became the fourth Japanese athlete to go sub-4:10 in the event this year, as he captured the gold medal in 4:09.82.
Sitting in third place after the opening butterfly leg, Numata moved to the front of the field on backstroke and was never challenged. Numata recorded a five-second triumph over the United States’ Yi Zheng, who earned the silver medal in 4:14.94. The bronze went to Japan’s Ayumu Negishi, behind a swim of 4:15.44. Numata trailed by a half-second after the butterfly, but was in front by 2.04 seconds after a backstroke split of 1:04.37.
Japan was also victorious in the girls’ 400 individual medley, as Shuna Sasaki prevailed in 4:39.36. She was the lone swimmer to break 4:40, with Australian Amelie Smith finishing in second place in 4:40.40. In the boys’ 100 breaststroke, Japan’s Yusei Imaizumi was the only athlete to break the minute barrier, going 59.98.
The United States’ Luka Mijatovic picked up his third victory of the meet when he rallied to hit the wall first in the 100 freestyle. Mijatovic checked in at 49.53, followed by Argentina’s Matias Chaillou (49.56) and American Jordan Ragland (49.65). On the opening night of the meet, Mijatovic won the 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle, the latter event in a National Age Group (NAG) record.
The girls’ 100 breaststroke featured a dominant display from Aussie Lilla Ribot De Bresac, who covered her two laps in 1:07.17, well ahead of the 1:07.79 of Japan’s Mana Ishikawa.
Canada grabbed its first gold medal of the meet when Ranumi Eashwarage clocked 55.00 in the girls’ 100 freestyle, .07 ahead of runnerup Aria Grossenbach of the United States. Coming off a title in the 200 freestyle, Abi Burke was the bronze medalist in 55.19.
