Pan Pacific Championships: Night Four Heat Sheets; Katie Ledecky vs. Lani Pallister in 800 Freestyle
The last session of the Pan Pacific Championships will unfold on Saturday night at the William Woollett Aquatics Center, with the final of the women’s 50-meter freestyle the headline event. During the morning prelims, American Kate Douglass set a world record of 23.49, breaking the prior standard of 23.55, held by her training partner, Gretchen Walsh. Douglass and Walsh will go head-to-head in the night session, the world record once again on alert.
In the men’s 50 freestyle, Australian Jamie Jack is the top seed after a morning mark of 21.42 and will be challenged by second-seeded Quintin McCarty (21.56) of the United States. Also in the mix for medals will be Brazil’s Gui Caribe (21.63) and American Jack Alexy (21.66). Alexy was the winner of the 100 freestyle earlier in the meet and anchored the United States to gold in the 400 freestyle relay.
Night Four competition will get underway with finals in the women’s and men’s 200 individual medley, those events followed by the sprints. The 200 breaststroke finals will be next, preceding championship heats in the men’s 1500 freestyle and women’s 800 freestyle. The 800 free is expected to be a battle between world-record holder Katie Ledecky and Australian star Lani Pallister. The evening will conclude with finals in the women’s and men’s 400 medley relays.
