Los Angeles 2028 Torch Relay to Touch All 50 U.S. States
The Olympic torch relay for the 2028 Los Angeles will visit all 50 states in the United States, it was announced on Tuesday.
The journey will begin in Atlanta, which hosted the most recent American Summer Olympics in 1996. The Olympic flame will be extinguished in the Olympic Cauldron at the close of the 2028 Olympics, then the Paralympic torch relay will take its own journey to Los Angeles before that event the following month.
The Olympic flame originates in Olympia, Greece, at the start of each Olympics. For the Paralympics, the torch relay begins in Stoke Mandeville, England, the Paralympic movement’s birthplace.
Torchbearers – on foot, by bicycle, train, boat or other modes of transportation – will carry the flame from the start to the Los Angeles location using uniquely designed torches to connect to that year’s Games.
The torch relay will be the sixth hosted in the United States, starting with the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. Three have been Winter Games – Lake Placid in 1980 and Salt Lake City in 2002 – with the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles and Atlanta in 1996.
Full torch relay routes will be announced in 2027, and selected individuals can be named to the torch relay via a nomination process.
