Hubert Kos, Audrey Derivaux Among Double Winners at Texas Intrasquad
The University of Texas competed Friday in its annual preseason intrasquad meet, named in honor of the late Sam Kendricks, a longtime public address announcer at national-level competition who was once a manager and coach for the Longhorns. This year, Texas competed against professional swimmers training in Austin under the banner of Longhorn Aquatics, with big-name swimmers such as Hubert Kos and Chris Guiliano joining the collegians.
Kos, Jack Kelly, Tyler Ray and Guiliano kicked off the men’s competition with a 200 medley relay time of 1:24.35. Guiliano later won the 50 freestyle in 19.84 while Kos cruised to a time of 1:43.76 in the 200 backstroke. Kos returned to dominate the 200 IM in 1:44.54. A pair of former Michigan Wolverines now training at Texas also grabbed wins, Jack Wilkening in the 100 back (46.75) and Ray in the 200 butterfly (1:42.48) and 100 butterfly (46.04).
Rex Maurer, now a senior at Texas, took first in the 1000 free (9:03.14) and 500 free (4:22.16). Campbell McKean put up a time of 53.20 in the 100 breast to edge teammates Luka Mladenovic (53.38) and Nate Germonprez (54.39). Mladenovic topped the 200 breast in 1:57.82, six hundredths better than McKean.
Laon Kim, a freshman from Canada, debuted with a strong time of 1:35.01 in the 200 free, winning over Guiliano and Luke Hobson. He followed that up with a 43.44 in the 100 free, ahead of Rafael Fente-Damers as well as Guiliano and Hobson. Fente-Damers, Maurer, Will Modglin and Kim were timed at 2:53.44 in the 400 free relay while winning divers included Jacob Jones (1-meter, 368.63) and Matej Nevescanin (3-meter, 394.13).
In women’s competition, world junior champion Audrey Derivaux debuted for Texas with a dominant swim in the 200 fly, clocking 1:55.91. She later won the 200 back in 1:54.41, holding off teammate Lillie Nesty (1:54.72). Derivaux’s fellow freshman Mena Boardman had wins in the 50 free (23.12) and 100 fly (53.11).
Emma Kern, Piper Enge, Campbell Stoll and Eva Okaro swam a time of 1:38.19 in the 200 medley relay. Veteran Erin Gemmell got to the wall in 1:45.36 in the 200 free while Enge dominated the 100 breast (1:00.28) and 200 breast (2:15.07). Sydney Schoeck placed first in the 1000 free (9:46.36), and Aussie native Inez Miller won the 500 free (4:49.28). Sarah Rodrigues went 53.60 for first in the 100 back . Nikolett Padar swam a time of 49.30 in the 100 free.
In the 200 IM, Campbell Chase picked up the win in 2:01.34, well ahead of reigning NCAA champion Campbell Stoll (2:03.33). In diving, Caroline Kupka topped 1-meter (320.70) while Bayleigh Cranford was first on 3-meter (352.05).
