Chicago Native Briana Mingmuang Lends 2028 Verbal to In-State Fighting Illini
NEW COMMIT: The University of Illinois has received its first public verbal commitment for Fall 2028 from in-state standout Briana Mingmuang of Chicago, Ill. Mingmuang is a Junior National qualifier who specializes in backstroke.
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I’m thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Illinois! I’m incredibly grateful to my family, friends and coaches, especially coaches, Dave, Justin, Ethan, Gerald and Max for their constant support and guidance over the years. A special thank you as well to Coaches, Jeana, Jerod and Zach for this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to be part of such an incredible team. Go Illini!!”
Mingmuang, who trains year-round with Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club, capped off her long course season at NCSA Summer Championships where she placed 17th in the 100m back. Back in March, she earned silver in the 50 back and bronze in the 200 back at Illinois Short Course Seniors, also placing fourth in the 100 back.
Her best times include:
- 50 back – 25.84
- 100 back – 55.21
- 200 back – 1:59.87
- 100 fly – 56.79
Currently a junior at Whitney Young High School, Mingmuang placed sixth in the 100 back at the 2026 Illinois State Championships. The NISCA All-American took seventh in that event at the state meet as a freshman in 2024.
Mingmuang’s best times in the 50 back and 200 back would’ve ranked third on the Fighting Illini’s roster last year, while her top time in the 100 back would’ve been fourth.
