Asia’s finest archers are set to take centre stage at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square in Okazaki City when the archery competition at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 gets underway on Saturday.
Nearly 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and an OCA refugee team have gathered for the Games, which feature 43 sports across 54 venues in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya city, with additional venues in Tokyo, Shizuoka and Mie prefectures.
Archery runs from 26 September to 3 October, with 214 athletes from 29 countries – including Olympic and regional champions – competing for 10 continental titles.
There is added significance this time, with six quota places for the LA28 Olympic Games available. Two quota places each are on offer in the recurve men’s and women’s individual events, with one each in the recurve mixed team and compound mixed team competitions.
Five-time Olympic champion Kim Woojin will lead Korea’s formidable recurve challenge alongside reigning World Champion Kang Chaeyoung.
Kim will be joined by Kim Je Deok and Lee Woo Seok, reuniting the men’s team that won gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Lee and Kim Je Deok were also part of Korea’s gold medal-winning team at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
World number three Kang, meanwhile, will lead a relatively inexperienced Korean women’s team featuring Oh Yejin and Lee Yunji.
Korea won a record-extending 10th consecutive Olympic women’s team title at Paris 2024, but arrive with an entirely different line-up for Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
That could open the door for China, whose promising trio of Zhu Jingyi, Yu Qi and Huang Yuwei produced an impressive campaign in Puebla earlier this year, winning team gold, with Zhu also part of the mixed team victory.
With world number two Zhu leading the Chinese challenge, a potential battle between the two East Asian powerhouses could be among the highlights of the recurve competition.
India will also arrive with plenty of confidence.
Dhiraj Bommadevara’s historic victory at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Saltillo, Mexico, has established him as another major name to watch in the recurve men’s competition.
India will also attempt to defend its dominance in compound after sweeping all five titles at Hangzhou 2022, with Jyothi Surekha Vennam spearheading a powerful squad.
The compound mixed team competition will also carry significance in Okazaki.
With the discipline set to make its historic Olympic debut at LA28, one quota place is available at the Asian Games, adding another layer of intrigue to the battle for continental honours.
