Virginia Lands First 2028 Verbal Pledge From Versatile Shelby Hutchinson

NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has kickstarted its Class of 2032 recruiting with a verbal commitment from Shelby Hutchinson of Haddon Township, N.J. A Nationals qualifier, Hutchinson is among the top recruits in her class.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am honored to announce my verbal commitment for the class of 2028 to the University of Virginia! I am beyond grateful for the UVA coaches, staff, and team for welcoming me to their school. A special thank you to my family, coaches, and the South Jersey swimming community for guiding me on this adventure. I can’t wait to be a HOO!!”

Hutchinson trains year-round with South Jersey Aquatic Club and excels in backstroke, butterfly and sprint freestyle. She most recently raced seven events at the USA Swimming National Championships last month. She finished 11th in the 100 back as well as 17th in both the 100 fly and 200 back at Juniors East in December before going on to win all of her events at Middle Atlantic Seniors in March.

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 51.87
  • 200 back – 1:55.49
  • 100 fly – 52.26
  • 50 free – 22.63
  • 100 free – 49.51

Currently a junior at Haddon Township High School, Hutchinson won the 100 back and the 100 fly at the 2026 New Jersey Meet of Champions. She took second and first, respectively, in those events at the state meet as a freshman in 2025.

The Cavaliers won their seventh straight Atlantic Coast Conference title and their sixth consecutive NCAA Championship crown in 2026. Hutchinson’s best times in the 100 back and 100 fly are already fast enough to score in the ACC B-final.
