Yankees pitching struggles in 8-1 spring training loss to Blue Jays

by

The Yankees were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon in Dunedin, Fla.

Here are some key takeaways …

Jose Trevino was back behind the dish for the Yankees, and he continues to look good both at the dish and behind the plate. Trevino had a wrist injury last season and a calf injury that delayed the start of his spring, but the former Platinum Glove winner had a first-inning single as the Yankees pushed across an early run off of Jose Berrios.

– The Yankees didn’t play a lot of their regulars in this one. Trevino and shortstop Anthony Volpe were the only likely Opening Day starters in the lineup, with role players like Trent Grisham and Oswaldo Cabrera also in the starting nine.

– Volpe had a day to forget at the plate. The young shortstop went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.

Volpe had a 20-20 season and won a Gold Glove as a rookie, but the Yankees are hoping he can improve on his .209 batting average. Despite the 0-for, Volpe is still hitting .310 this spring.

– It was a bullpen day on the mound for the Yankees, with veteran reliever Dennis Santana starting. Santana went 1.2 innings while allowing one earned run on three hits. Santana has had a nice spring as he tries to make the Yanks’ roster, having allowed just one earned run in 7.2 innings.

Aside from Santana, it was a tough day for Yankees pitchers. Duane Underwood Jr., Clayton Andrews, and Zach Messinger combined to allow seven runs over 4.0 innings, including a five-run fifth for Toronto.

– For any jersey number fanatics, Cabrera has officially changed from No. 95 to No. 33. Cabrera showed off the new number by starting a nice 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the third inning.

Cabrera went 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
