Women’s College Basketball: CSUB can’t hold lead in loss; Cabrillo doubles up BC in defeat

There were positives to be gleaned by the Cal State Bakersfield women’s basketball team in the first three quarters of its final game on the 2024 calendar.

The opposition, Seattle University, seemed ripe for the possibility of the Roadrunners securing their first win of the season. CSUB led after the first quarter and a slim halftime lead. An even third quarter kept CSUB in front. But Seattle outscored CSUB 12-2 in the final frame to pull away for a 58-49 non-conference victory Sunday at the Icardo Center.

The victory improved the Redhawks’ record to 3-10 while CSUB fell to 0-12 on the season.

The Roadrunners shot a whopping 61.5% in the first quarter on 8-of-13 shooting, but the numbers went down in the ensuing quarters, finishing with a 1-for-12 effort in the final quarter to give CSUB a 31.6% overall shooting percentage. CSUB cut its turnover total down with 12, but Seattle only had 10.

Ary Dizon had 17 points and recorded five blocks defensively to lead the Roadrunners. Melissa Secchiaroli had seven points and four assists. Taylor Caldwell had nine rebounds.

Seattle’s top scorers were Tamia Stricklin with 21 points, despite fouling out of the game. and Candy Edokpaigbe added 16.

The Roadrunners, who lost two Big West Conference games a few weeks back, begin the full-on Big West schedule 6 p.m. Thursday at UC Davis and 2 p.m. Saturday at Long Beach State.

BC Women’s Basketball

The Renegades closed out the 2024 portion of their season schedule by being held to their lowest-scoring total of the season in a 46-23 non-conference road loss at Cabrillo College on Saturday night.

BC (4-9) were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 18-5 at halftime. BC actually outscored Cabrillo 14-9 in the third quarter, but were outscored 19-4 in the fourth quarter.

Jocelyn Pope led all BC players with eight points, Jessica Owens had six. Zaila Marquez had a team-high nine rebounds. Cabrillo, which improved to 11-4, was led offensively by Renee Parker’s 12 points and Gabby Brooks’ 11. Jess Berry had eight rebounds.

The Renegades return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday against Fresno at BC’s Gil Bishop Sports Center.
