Where Wisconsin basketball ranks in AP Poll entering New Year

by

Wisconsin basketball (10-3, 0-2 Big Ten) is unranked in the latest AP Poll.

The Badgers dropped voting points after an idle week. They entered the week with 18 votes, the 37th-highest total in the nation. Now, the team received just seven votes, dropping to No. 43.

Wisconsin has played just one game since Dec. 14 — a 76-53 win over Detroit Mercy. Its inactivity and lack of recent signature wins have led to a slight downgrade. The Badgers also dropped out of the ‘receiving votes’ section of the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Tennessee (12-0) leads the AP Poll entering the New Year. Auburn (11-1) follows at No. 2, then comes Iowa State (10-1), Duke (10-2), and Alabama (11-2).

Ranked Big Ten teams entering the full conference schedule are No. 9 Oregon (12-1, 1-1 Big Ten), No. 15 UCLA (11-2, 2-0 Big Ten), No. 18 Michigan State (11-2, 2-0 Big Ten), No. 20 Purdue (9-4, 1-1 Big Ten) and No. 22 Illinois (9-3, 1-1 Big Ten). The deep conference also has Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State and Nebraska in the ‘receiving votes’ section.

Wisconsin begins what is a gauntlet rest-of-season schedule with a home matchup against Iowa on Jan. 3. The Badgers need to string together wins if they hope to return to the top-11 AP Poll ranking they held in early December.
