Mississippi State women’s basketball is off to a poor start in SEC play but remains in the latest NCAA tournament field projections.
The Bulldogs (13-3, 0-2 SEC) were pummeled in both of their conference games by Kentucky and South Carolina. They host No. 11 Oklahoma (13-2, 1-1) at Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday (6:30 p.m., SEC Network+) for their third straight game against a ranked opponent.

ESPN’s Charlie Creme has Mississippi State as a No. 9 seed in Region 3 squaring off against No. 8 Baylor. The winner would play either No. 1 Notre Dame or No. 16 seeds Texas Southern or Iona. Those games would be hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Mississippi State’s NCAA tournament resume is bolstered by its 13-1 run through the nonconference schedule. It is ranked No. 33 in the NET rankings as of Tuesday.
MSU is 12-0 in Quads 2, 3 and 4 but 1-3 in Quad 1 games. Utah is MSU’s only Quad 1 win.

Mississippi State women’s basketball NCAA tournament history under Sam Purcell
MSU has reached the NCAA tournament once in coach Sam Purcell’s two seasons. In 2022-23, MSU won in the First Four and the first round before losing to Notre Dame in the second round.
The Bulldogs have made NCAA tournament appearances 12 times and have won at least one game 11 straight times.
