BATON ROUGE – Tonight’s matchup between No. 5 LSU women’s basketball and Stanford doesn’t quite have the luster it could’ve had but it’ll be a good test for both teams nonetheless.

Longtime and legendary coach Tar VanDerveer retired following last season and her longtime assistant Kate Paye has taken over the Cardinal and has guided them to a 7-1 record to open her first season as head coach.

A Kim Mulkey-VanDerveer matchup would be appointment viewing. But don’t sleep on this game as LSU eyes a 10-0 start for the second time under Mulkey, and it will have to come at the expense of name brand in women’s basketball.

Stanford primarily works from the inside out on offense with sophomore forward Nunu Agara, who has taken 34 more shots than her closest teammate. And she’s pretty efficient as well, making 53% of her shots.

The Tigers will counter with senior Aneesah Morrow, who will be slightly undersized in the matchup. But LSU’s do-it-all forward has been on a tear lately, scoring at least 17 points in each of her last five games. Morrow is averaging a double-double, 18.2 points and 13 rebounds per game, and is also known for her defense as she has 20 steals.
