Offense isn’t the problem for Louisville women’s basketball.

The No. 20 Cardinals are averaging 75 points per game, which is sixth in the ACC and tied for 42nd nationally. U of L coach Jeff Walz said his program is 329-29 when scoring 70 or more points. The 29th loss came Sunday, when Louisville fell to eighth-ranked Virginia Tech, 86-70, as a result of defensive miscues and breakdowns.

Walz said although the Cardinals’ post players have defended well, the guards must become better defenders.

“It’s not that you’re just gonna be lockdown. I just need you (to not) get beat,” Walz said. “You can’t get beat, and you have to know the assignment. That’s the biggest challenge. If you’re not the best defender on the team, you can’t be the worst, especially if you’re going to play a lot.”

Walz praised Nina Rickards’ defensive efforts against Dyaisha Fair (Syracuse), Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame) and Georgia Amoore (Virginia Tech), but said he needs to get the rest of the Cardinals’ backcourt “dialed in to give us effort.”

The margin for error is smaller as Louisville begins the final four-game stretch of the regular season Thursday at Georgia Tech.
