Georgia basketball’s turnover troubles have been a bugaboo this season, but never were as glaring as in the first half Saturday at Florida.

Ten different Bulldogs combined for 14 turnovers and the Gators were on their way to an 89-59 stomping.

“The game was over early,” Georgia coach Mike White said after his second biggest loss in his three Bulldog seasons. “I haven’t been a part of many of those.”

Georgia (14-6, 2-5 SEC) gets a chance to snap its four-game losing streak Tuesday night against South Carolina in Stegeman Coliseum.

The Gamecocks (10-10, 0-7) are the only remaining winless SEC team.

Georgia has 55 assists to 105 turnovers in SEC play and every player has more turnovers than assists. The Bulldogs rank last in the SEC on the season in assist/turnover ratio at 0.95 and had 9 assists and 18 turnovers against Florida.

“It’s been a big factor in all of our losses this year,” White said. “Our decisions, our carelessness with the ball at times, our ball toughness at times, our incorrect reads and vs. ball screen coverages. Florida did a really good job of running through passes and loading to the basketball and keeping pressure on the basketball.”

Florida coach Todd Golden said Georgia tries to attack the paint but “we did a good job keeping them out of there. Forced them to make more skilled passes, which we were able to deflect or intercept and turn them into offense.”

The Bulldogs assist leader last year, Justin Hill, transferred to Wichita State. He is fifth in the AAC with a 2.06 assist/turnover ratio.

Georgia is averaging 64.7 points in SEC games — 14th in the league — against a schedule that has included the top four teams in scoring defense Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida.

“We’ve got to figure out what we’re doing offensively because turnovers continue to kill us,” White said.
