Western Oregon cancels remainder of women’s basketball season without saying why

by

Western Oregon University has canceled the remaining four games of its women’s basketball season, the school confirmed in a press release Friday.

The announcement came three days after the NCAA Division II school in Monmouth announced that it had canceled a Thursday game against Western Washington and a Saturday game against Simon Fraser.

The school did not give a reason but said it was “due to internal team challenges.”

“The decision reflects a commitment to addressing and resolving issues impacting the program,” the school said in the press release.

The team will end the season with a 10-19 record overall and a 3-15 record in conference play.

“The decision to cancel the season aligns with the highest standards of integrity and accountability within our program,” Randi Lydum, WOU’s executive director of intercollegiate athletics, said in a statement. “We are committed to the success of players and coaches at Western and are taking proactive steps to that end.”

Jessica Peatross is in her first season as head coach of the team. Peatross coached the women’s basketball team at Salem University in Salem, West Virginia, during the 2022-23 school year. She previously spent two years as head coach at Delta College, a junior college in University Center, Michigan, and also was the conference coach of the year in 2021. She also was the men’s golf coach there for two seasons.

Western Oregon‘s women’s basketball team won national championships in 1995 and 1996.
