The UTEP women’s basketball team’s path to it’s first road win was a likely one.
The Miners locked down on defense, balanced their scoring, made shots and dominated the boards, leading Sam Houston throughout to win 82-66.

UTEP improved to 1-8 on the road this year and is now 4-8 in Conference USA, tied with Louisiana Tech for seventh. Sam Houston fell to 2-11 in CUSA. Seven teams receive byes to the league tournament.
The Miners never trailed, but were tied at the middle of the second quarter and were ahead 29-28 with 1:42 left in the first half before a quick nine-point run led to a 37-31 halftime lead.
Then early in the third quarter UTEP went on a 10-2 run to push the lead to 58-42 and it wasn’t threatened the rest of the game.
The Miners were led, as they often are, by Jane Asinde, who scored 22 points with 14 rebounds and 8-of-8 free-throw shooting, and she had help. Erin Wilson had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Mahri Petree scored 13 points with seven rebounds, Louisa Vydrova had 10 points and Ivane Tensaie had 11.
UTEP shot 50% from the field, including 7-of-15 3-pointers, to Sam Houston’s 35% and the Miners won the boards 46-29.
