The Mets visited the Washington Nationals in split-squad action, falling 9-8.
Here are a few key takeaways…
– Manager Carlos Mendoza said before the game that he expected Tylor Megill to go about five innings or 75 pitches on Sunday afternoon, but the Nats had other plans.
Megill went just 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with two walks and only one strikeout. Megill has had some nasty strikeout stuff this spring, but he wasn’t able to put batters away on Sunday.
– It’s been a rough spring for Luke Voit, who seems more likely to be auditioning for other teams than making the Mets roster, but he put his patented power on display in the bottom of the second, blasting an opposite-field home run off of Nats lefty MacKenzie Gore.
–Â Omar Narvaez had a nice day at the dish, driving the ball with authority on a couple of occasions. The veteran will likely be the backup to Francisco Alvarez this season, but his ability to hit with conviction and command a game behind the plate could be invaluable off the bench for New York.
Narvaez had two hits on the afternoon and drove in a pair.
– Pete Alonso had a nice day at the dish, recording a pair of hits while scoring a run and driving one in.
Alonso is hitting .286 with a .990 OPS this spring.
– The bottom of the sixth inning was a nightmare for reliever Austin Adams. The righty allowed five hits and committed an error on a pickoff attempt.
In all, Adams, who is fighting for a spot in the bullpen, was charged with four earned runs on five hits while recording just two outs.
