TALLAHASSEE – Junior forward Makayla Timpson’s dominant second half sparked Florida State Women’s Basketball to a 71-63 win at Wake Forest on Thursday night at the LJVM Coliseum.
Timpson recorded 16 points and 16 rebounds, her 13th double-double of the season and fourth consecutive. The Edison, Ga., native had 14 points and 10 rebounds just in the second half, using a key third quarter surge where she went on an 8-0 run by herself to give the Seminoles (18-8, 9-5) some much needed distance from the Demon Deacons (4-21, 0-13). Timpson’s 16 boards mark a career high.
Timpson’s 13 double-doubles are now two shy of matching FSU legend Natasha Howard‘s school-record 15 single-season double-doubles from the 2013-14 season.
Both Timpson and fifth-year guard Sara Bejedi reached milestones tonight, surpassing 1,000 points in their collegiate careers.
With FSU clinging to a 46-45 lead with 6:08 left in the third, Timpson busted the game open with her 8-0 run. She scored 10 points in the third quarter to give FSU a 58-49 lead heading into the fourth.
Ta’Niya Latson led all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Bejedi was efficient with 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while O’Mariah Gordon added 10 points.
Florida State out-rebounded Wake Forest in the second half, 23-15, and held a 38-32 edge for the game. Wake Forest made one more push in the fourth, getting to within 58-54 with 9:10 left in the game, but Latson continued to draw fouls and get to the line to help put the game away.
The win was big for FSU, as it moves up to sole possession of fifth place in the latest ACC standings.
FSU returns on Sunday at Miami for a 4 p.m. tip on the ACC Network.
