Three Alabama women’s basketball starters earn 2024 SEC postseason awards

Three student-athletes from the Alabama women’s basketball team earned 2024 SEC postseason awards on Tuesday.

Senior Sarah Ashlee Barker was named first team All-SEC, followed by senior Aaliyah Nye named second team All-SEC and Essence Cody named to the All-Freshman team for the Crimson Tide, giving it three starters named to all-conference teams.

In their senior seasons for Alabama, Barker and Nye have taken major steps forward in terms of leadership and play, leading Alabama to its first 10-win conference season in 26 years.

In 2023-24, Barker averaged 17.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game on the way to being the Crimson Tide’s 21st player to receive first team honors. She also became the 34th member of the 1,000-point club in Alabama women’s basketball history.

Nye averaged 14.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game in her senior season for Alabama, finishing as the school’s 20th player to earn second team honors and the second in the past two years behind Brittany Davis’ 2022 honor. Nye also became the 33rd member of the 1,000-point club in Alabama women’s basketball history.

In her freshman season for Alabama, Essence Cody averaged 8.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game becoming the first Crimson Tide freshman named as an all-freshman performer since 2017.

Alabama begins SEC tournament play on Friday, March 8 against the winner of Tennessee and Kentucky/Georgia at approximately 1:30 p.m. CT.
