Thomas Ceccon Out Of Doha Worlds As Italy Announces Team Of 34

Thomas Ceccon and Margherita Panziera are notable absentees from the 34-strong Italy squad for the World Championships in Doha.

While the duo won’t make the trip to Qatar, Nicolo Martinenghi, Benedetta Pilato, Gregorio Paltrinieri and Simona Quadarella are among the team comprising 20 men and 14 women.

Nine athletes will make their worlds debut in Doha with the pool programme running from 11-18 February.

Three-time world champion Ceccon is recovering from a finger injury sustained in the latter part of December as he concluded a year in which he was the sole Italian champion at the Fukuoka worlds with gold in the 50 fly.

The 22-year-old also won silvers in the 100 back and the men’s 4×100 free although Italy missed out in the men’s medley relay, finishing ninth little more than a year after matching Britain’s European record of 3:27.51 en-route to gold at Budapest 2022.

The squad will need to confirm their Olympic berth in Doha with Ceccon having already booked an individual slot for Paris 2024 at the Italian Open in late November along with Alessandro Miressi, Alberto Razzetti, Pilato and Paltrinieri.

Panziera – winner of four European backstroke titles – will focus on the Italian Championships in March where she can qualify for Paris.
