AMARILLO — On Tuesday night, the Tascosa girls basketball team continued to add to their banner season with a 62-51 victory against Plainview in a District 3-5A contest.
The Lady Rebels (24-3), ranked No. 5 in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches top 25 poll, were led by 18 points from Devaeh Johnson. Mady Williams was the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer, tallying 24 points in the loss.
Game-changing plays
Both teams traded buckets in the first half, but Plainview went into the break with a 31-30 lead after knocking down five 3-pointers. Four came from Williams, who led all scorers with 16 points at halftime.
Johnson also had a strong performance, scoring 15 points in the first half, as Tascosa’s strong ball movement kept the Lady Rebels in the contest despite a a strong showing from beyond the arc from the Lady Bulldogs.
Dowd scored six of Tascosa’s first nine points in the third quarter as the Lady Rebels embarked on an 15-2 run that gave the home team a 47-33 advantage in the second half. Plainview’s shooting cooled off in the penultimate frame as the Lady Bulldogs managed to score just seven points.
Plainview found its rhythm again in the fourth quarter, but Tascosa was able to fend off the visiting team to secure a 62-51 victory.

Tascosa junior Devaeh Johnson: “Going into the locker room (at halftime), I just told my team (to) just keep our heads in the game. They’re shooting (well). They’re a good team, but we’re also not playing to the best of our abilities. Let’s just go out, work, and show them who we are. Not get down on ourselves.”

Tascosa will look to continue its impressive 2024-25 campaign at 6 p.m. Friday at Caprock. The Lady Bulldogs meet another top five-ranked opponent when Monterey travels to Plainview for a 6 p.m. Friday contest.
