SDSU forward Brooklyn Meyer (31) looks to pass the ball to a teammate on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024 at Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion.

South Dakota State women’s basketball flipped the switch in the second quarter against South Dakota and never looked back. The Jackrabbits earned their ninth consecutive conference win of the season in a 70-55 victory over the Coyotes.

The first half was a tale of two quarters. South Dakota State looked nothing like the team sitting atop the Summit League in the first quarter. They struggled to take care of the basketball, turning the ball over six times, and shot just 3-of-13 from the field.

The Coyotes on the other hand, looked like they were the ones sitting at the top of the conference with the way they played in the first quarter. They were getting good looks, shot 6-for-12 from the field and looked to be in control.

But something flipped for the Jackrabbits in the second quarter. South Dakota State dominated the paint and Brooklyn Meyer played a big part in the turnaround.

SDSU shot over 50% from the field in the second quarter and scored eight of their 22 second quarter points in the painted area. They also managed to keep the Coyotes scoreless in their own restricted area and outrebounded USD by five.

Meyer finished the first half with 12 points and six rebounds – two of which came on the offensive glass where the Jackrabbits held a 6-1 advantage at halftime.

South Dakota State continued to outplay South Dakota in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring them by seven and four points respectively.

Meyer had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds. Natalie Mazurek led USD in scoring with 17 points on 60% shooting from the field.

Up next, South Dakota State will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on Oral Roberts on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Coyotes will also head out on the road for their next game against Denver on Thursday, Feb. 8.
