After trailing 12-11 against Denver, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team used a second-quarter surge to regain the lead and earn a 79-42 win over the Pioneers.
The win is the Jackrabbits’ second Summit League victory of the season.
SDSU completely dominated Denver, especially offensively. South Dakota State shot 61% from the field and 47.6% from beyond the arc. Brooklyn Meyer and Madison Mathiowetz led the Jackrabbits in scoring with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Meyer shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and posted another double-double, tallying 10 rebounds. Mathiowetz shot 7-for-11 and 4-for-6 from long range. She also recorded eight rebounds.
On defense, South Dakota State held Denver to 28% shooting from the field and 25% from 3-point range. The Pioneers only had one player score in double-figures, with Jordan Jones scoring 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting.
The Jackrabbits also completely dominated the glass, outrebounding Denver 41-17. The only category the Pioneers won was turnovers, but they weren’t able to fully capitalize, only scoring 15 points off South Dakota State’s 16 turnovers. On the other hand, the Jackrabbits scored 17 points off Denver’s 11 turnovers.
Up next, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team will host Omaha on Thursday, Jan. 9.
