South Carolina women’s basketball returns to SEC play for the final five games of the season, beginning its final stretch with a game against Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The No. 1 Gamecocks (23-0, 10-0 SEC) can put distance between themselves and the rest of the conference with a win Thursday (7 p.m., ESPN). The Lady Vols (15-8, 8-3) are tied for second with No. 11 LSU.

South Carolina is returning to conference play following an 83-65 victory over then-No. 9 UConn. Senior guard Te-Hina Paopao was the team’s leading scorer, recording 16 of her 21 points in the first half and making five 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard Ashlyn Watkins scored 15 points with nine rebounds while starting in place of senior center Kamilla Cardoso. Cardoso, who missed two games while with Team Brazil in an Olympic qualifying tournament, will return against the Lady Vols.

Tennessee is led by fifth-year forward Rickea Jackson. She is averaging 18.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game but missed eight games because of an injury. The Lady Vols have also relied on senior guard Jewel Spear and junior forward Sara Puckett, who average 13.3 and 10.2 points, respectively.

Tennessee holds a 49-12 series advantage against South Carolina, but the rivalry has turned in recent years. The Gamecocks have won seven of the past eight and are 11-12 against the Lady Vols since Dawn Staley took over as coach in 2008-09.

The two squads most recently met in the 2023 SEC Tournament Championship Game, with South Carolina rolling to a 74-58 victory.
