Reds 2B Matt McLain may need surgery on injured left shoulder

by

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain is being evaluated for a shoulder injury that could require surgery.

Manager David Bell said Wednesday that “all of the options are on the table” after an MRI on McLain’s left shoulder.

Bell said those options include surgery for the second-year infielder, who likely will begin the season on the injured list.

McLain, a first-round draft selection in 2021, is the latest Reds position player to be sidelined over the last several weeks.

Cincinnati also will be without center fielder TJ Friedl, who is out indefinitely with a fractured wrist, and infield prospect Noelvi Marte, who was suspended 80 games earlier this month after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

McLain, 24, made his major league debut in 2023 and batted .290 with 16 home runs, 50 RBI and 14 steals in 89 games.
