The Oklahoma Sooners have added 14 players in the transfer portal with a vast majority coming on the offensive side of the football.
Oklahoma’s brought in 10 players on offense, two on defense, and two on special teams. The Sooners will have a number of important position battles on offense this offseason as they try to rebound from the worst offensive performance of the last 25 years.
Defensively, the Sooners don’t have a lot of needs but did address some key spots with a couple of veteran additions.
Here’s a look at what Oklahoma’s added in the transfer portal this offseason.
Quarterback: 2
The Oklahoma Sooners added the top player in the transfer portal in John Mateer. Mateer recorded 44 total touchdowns in 2024 with Washington State, and the Sooners are hoping he can recreate that production in his second year as a starter in Ben Arbuckle’s offense. Mateer will be the favorite to start for the Oklahoma Sooners after his productive season with the Cougars.
Cole Gonzales was a productive quarterback in his time with Western Carolina. He adds experience to the quarterback room and can sling it.
Wide Receiver: 4
The Oklahoma Sooners added four wide receivers via the transfer portal. Keontez Lewis and Javonnie Gibson make the move from the FCS level after a strong year of production in 2024. Isaiah Sategna showed a dynamic ability in the return game. Josiah Martin is young but is an explosive player that will add a dynamic ability go the Sooners
The group may not have a bunch of name recognition, but they’re a dynamic group that will be a factor for the Sooners offense in 2025. Wide receiver will be one of the most intriguing position battles in 2025.
Tight End: 3
Oklahoma didn’t get very aggressive in the tight end market, adding Carson Kent from Kennesaw State, Will Huggins from Pittsburgh State, and John Locke from Louisiana Tech.
The Sooners have added experience, but they’ve got several good young players that they’d like to develop in Kaden Helms, Davon Mitchell, and Kade McIntyre. Each of those three has a higher athletic ceiling.
Offensive Line: 2
The Oklahoma Sooners weren’t as active in the offensive line market in the transfer portal but added two players who could start games for them in 2025 with the additions of offensive tackles Luke Baklenko and Derek Simmons.
The Sooners didn’t need to be as active after retaining a number of promising young linemen to go along with their additions in the 2025 recruiting class.
Defensive Line: 1
The Oklahoma Sooners have added just one player along the defensive line in former five-star prospect Marvin Jones Jr. He’ll have a chance to start at defensive end opposite of R Mason Thomas.
Linebacker: 1
Oklahoma State transfer Kendal Daniels will have a chance to play a significant role in the Oklahoma Sooners linebacker corps. His ability to play multiple positions gives Brent Venables and the defensive staff a dynamic chess piece to move around the field.
Special Teams: 2
The Oklahoma Sooners added kicker Austin Welch and punter Jacob Ulrich to their special teams units for 2025. Both players add experience to the position battles this offseason and were two of the bright spots for an otherwise bad Kennesaw State team.
