Peoria-area’s top high school football player finds college home right here in Illinois

Lane Wheelwright has found a college home.

The Farmington all-state quarterback announced his commitment Sunday to North Central College, an NCAA Division III power in Naperville. Wheelwright was named the 2024 Journal Star football player of the year after leading the Farmers to the Class 2A state semifinals and a program-best 12-1 record.

“Thank you to my coaches, teammates, family,” Wheelwright posted on his Twitter account, “and everyone who has been a part of my journey.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior threw for 2,097 yards on 128-of-214 passing (60 percent) with 25 touchdowns, while rushing for 10 TDs and 323 yards. He missed the final two regular-season games due to an ankle injury. He was also named the LincolndLand Conference-Large Division Offensive Player of the Year for a second straight season.

Wheelwright joins a North Central College program that is scheduled to play in its fifth consecutive Division-III national championship game at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5. The Cardinals (14-0), who won the 2022 and 2019 titles, face Mount Union (14-0) in a rematch of the 2022 national title game.
