Ohio State Women Dominant at Tim Welsh Classic
Notre Dame’s women welcomed several strong teams from across the Midwest to South Bend, Ind., and the Ohio State Buckeyes dominated the proceedings, scoring nearly double the points of any other team. Ohio State scored 1623 points, ahead of the Fighting Irish (818), Akron (803), Indiana State (478) and Wisconsin (50). The Buckeye men also competed at the meet.
Ohio State’s first win came from Mila Nikanorov in the 500 freestyle (4:41.76), and there was a tie in the 200 IM between Paige Hall and Paige Delma, with both Buckeyes clocking 1:57.41. The 400 medley relay went the way of Ohio State’s team of Allie Fenska, Ava DeAngelis, Jessica Eden and Erin Little in a time of 3:34.37.
The Friday evening session opened with Fenska, Maria Ramos, Nyah Funderburke and Teresa Ivan going 1:36.27 in the 200 medley relay. Sienna Angove swam a time of 1:45.43 for the win in the 200 free, and DeAngelis went 59.71 to become the only sub-1:00 swimmer in the 100 breaststroke. Angove, Little, Nikanorov and Rachel Bockrath clocked 7:06.78 to dominate the 800 free relay.
The Saturday morning session began with Nikanorov dominating the 1650 free in a time of 16:22.17, and Krista Marlin won the 200 backstroke (1:53.32). Ivan was the winner of the 100 free in 48.57, and DeAngelis doubled up with a time of 2:09.61 in the 200 breast. Little, Angove, Ivan and Bockrath finished the 400 free relay in 3:13.55 to take the win.
Notre Dame’s team of Hollie Widdows, Jess Geriane, Imogen Meers and Madelyn Christman captured first in the 200 free relay in 1:28.68. Geriane led the way in the 50 free (22.29), and Carli Cronk topped the 400 IM (4:07.63) and 200 butterfly (1:55.28).
Akron got the win from Abby Daniel in the 100 fly (52.27) and another from Maddy Gatrall in the 100 back (52.88).
For the men, Ohio State was competing solo. Matthew Klinge, Daniel Baltes, Tomas Navikonis and Mario McDonald clocked 1:18.13 in the 200 free relay. Alex Metzler topped the 500 free (4:20.64), and Tristan Jankovics picked up the win in the 200 IM (1:44.25). Klinge won the 50 free in 19.58 before session one ended with Cornelius Jahn, Jankovics, Klinge and Navikonis going 3:09.31 in the 400 medley relay.
In the evening, Jahn, Karl Helmuth, Klinge and Baltes went 1:24.86 in the 200 medley relay. Metzler won the 400 IM (3:46.18), and Klinge led the way in the 100 fly (46.69). Navikonis won the 200 free (1:33.92), followed by victories from Helmuth (100 breast, 53.36) and Jahn (100 back, 47.15).
Veteran Charlie Clark got under 15:00 in the 1650 free with his time of 14:57.56, and Jahn won again in the 200 back (1:42.37), and Navikonis won his second freestyle victory over 100 yards (43.18). Luke Vickers (200 breast, 1:56.27) and Metzler (200 fly, 1:45.20) rounded out the individual winners before the team of Baltes, Jahn, McDonald and Jankovics went 2:52.07 in the 400 free relay.
