The 2024 NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships will continue from Athens, Georgia, with the Day 2 preliminary sessions.
The session begins at 10 a.m. ET and will consist of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle before 1-meter diving prelims.
Gretchen Walsh Shattered the 50 free record to close out the session.
NCAA Women’s 500 Free
Florida’s Emma Weyant was steady throughout her 500 and slowly pulled away in to win her heat in 4:34.32. Her time would stand with two heats to go.
In the seventh of eight heats, Indiana’s Anna Peplowski was able to hold off a trio of Georgia swimmers to get to the wall in 4:34.72.
The racing drama happened in the final heat.
Florida’s Bella Sims took an early lead in the final prelims heat of the 500 free. But at the 300 mark, Stanford’s Aurora Roghair caught up.
At the 350, Roghair was ahead. They turned together on the final 50 and Sims turned on the jets to finish in 4:35.01.
Roghair was second in the heat in 4:35.34.
Weyant had the top overall seed for finals, followed by Peploswki, Sims and Roghair.
Virginia freshman Cavan Gormsen took the fifth seed in 4:36.07, followed by the Georgia trio, who all made the final. Dune Coetzee took the sixth seed in 4:26.27, followed by teammates Abby McCulloh (4:36.40) and Rachel Stege (4:37.40).

NCAA Women’s 200 IM
Virginia’s Alex Walsh looked smooth and strong on her way to the top seed in the 200 IM.
She didn’t lead start to finish, however.
Wisconsin’s Phoebe Bacon took the lead after the butterfly and continued that lead after the backstroke. But Walsh took over during the breaststroke leg, as she often does, and had a second and a half lead heading into the freestyle leg. Walsh cruised into the wall at 1:51.95.
In the eighth of nine heats, Florida’s Isabel Ivey led after the butterfly but was overtaken by NC State’s Kennedy Noble after the backstroke. Georgia’s Zoie Hartman took the lead after the breaststroke but Ivey had enough in the tank during the freestyle to touch out Hartman.
Ivey finished in 1:53.63, just ahead of Hartman (1:53.79).
Walsh had the top seed ahead of Tennessee’s Josephine Fuller (1:52.95) and Virginia teammate Ella Nelson (1:53.05).
Texas’ Kelly Pash took the fourth seed in 1:53.37, ahead of Stanford’s Lucy Bell (1:53.50), Bacon (1:53.53), Ivey (1:53.63) and Florida’s Zoe Dixon (1:53.73).

NCAA Women’s 50 Free
Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh looked strong, breaking the NCAA record in the 50 free in 20.41.
Her previous NCAA record is 20.57. She stunned with a first 25 of 9.99.
Walsh set the previous mark at the ACC Championships in February. Now she has the meet record as well, which was set by LSU’s Maggie Mac Neil (20.79) two years ago.
In the sixth of eight heats, NC State’s Katharine Berkoff sprinted to a 21.23 and took the second seed.
In the seventh heat, Virginia’s Jasmine Nocentini went a 21.29 to take the third seed.
Louisville’s Christiana Regenauer and Gabi Albiero took the next two spots.
Three Louisville swimmers made the final, however there was a three-way tie for seventh, which required a three-way swim-off.
In the swim-off, Virginia’s Maxine Parker went a 21.61 and Louisville’s Julia Dennis went a 21.83 to also make the final, giving the Cardinals three up.
