World number one Mike Schloesser was named the World Games’ athlete of the month for January 2024 after he secured his first win of the calendar year without dropping a single point through five rounds of matchplay in Nimes.

The 30-year-old had overtaken legendary Colombian compounder Sara Lopez to become the longest-tenured world number one at the end of December.

I am feeling honoured to be athlete of the month,” the Dutchman said. “With the incredible indoor season I had, this is like the cherry on top of the cake.”

“And this makes me more motivated to keep working hard.”

A mixed team silver medallist at the World Games two years ago in Birmingham, Schloesser has accrued a mightily impressive resume, including world championship wins outdoors (2013), indoors (2018) and in the discipline of field (2018).

Having earned the nickname ‘Mister Perfect’ by being the first person to shoot a perfect 600-point qualifying round indoors in 2015 – in Nimes – he has also won the Hyundai Archery World Cup four times, in 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

The multisport World Games features a target archery competition for compound archers, and a field archery competition for recurve and barebow.

World Archery recently released the qualifying procedure for the next edition in Chengdu.
