Nearly 30 flood warnings are in place across the UK, with heavy rain set to hit much of the country this week.

It was a wet start to the day for many in the North West of England and Wales on Monday, with outbreaks of rain spreading southwards during the course of the morning. The wet weather is set to “weaken” as it moves eastwards so there will be “very little rain” arriving in to parts of London and the South East, which is expected to see one of the sunniest days of the week, according to forecasters.

However, the Met Office has said conditions are likely to become more “unsettled” as the week goes on, with heavy rain “from time to time” and “increasing risk” of strong winds. The forecasting body has issued a yellow weather warning for rain in South Wales and the South West of England, running Wednesday from midnight to 12pm.

It says heavy rain may result in homes and businesses being flooded, “some interruption to power supplies and other services”, and travel delays. In addition to the 28 flood warnings put in place by the Environment Agency, spanning from Bournemouth to Hull, an additional 191 flood alerts – marking areas where flooding is “possible” – are also in place.
