Florida State women’s basketball (15-4, 5-2) put on a historic performance in its 88-66 victory over rival Miami (11-7, 1-6) in front of a crowd of 2,631 at the Donald L. Tucker Center Sunday afternoon.

Makayla Timpson recorded the 42nd double-double of her career to set the program record. Timpson passed Natasha Howard’s mark of 41 that was set between 2010-14 with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Timpson added four blocks and three steals.

The Seminoles also made 18 three-point shots to establish a new program record for threes made in a game. They tied the previous record of 15 in their season opener against North Florida.

FSU has won back-to-back ACC games and 11 straight home games this season.

The Seminoles led early 8-0, but the Hurricanes used a 13-2 run to lead 22-18 at the end of the first quarter. It was a different story in the second quarter. FSU dominated UM and outscored the visitors 24-10 and led 42-32 at the half.

The Seminoles kept their foot on the gas, leading by as many as 27 points throughout the second half.

FSU was led by Ta’Niya Latson‘s 30 points.

“This one means just a little bit more every time,” FSU coach Brooke Wyckoff said. “These women came out ready to go despite a little bit of a slow start in the first quarter, you know that happens.”

Carla Viegas added 14 points off the bench for the Seminoles, and Sydney Bowels added 11.

Here are the takeaways.

The Florida State Seminoles defeated the Clemson Tigers 82-67 on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025.

Everything was going in for the Seminoles.

FSU set a new record with 18 three-pointers. Viegas shattered the previous mark when she made the Seminoles’ FSU’s 16th three-point jumper in the fourth quarter.

Latson also knocked down all five of her three-pointers and was 10 of 13 from the field.

The game’s intensity drove Latson to be aggressive from behind the three-point line. She sparked the Seminoles with back-to-back jumpers, leading them on an 11-0 run in the second quarter.

“I knew my team needed me in that moment. We had a couple of people in foul trouble, so I had to step up for my team and just be myself,” Latson said.

“Get back to being confident, especially from the three ball, because I can shoot it now. So yeah, just being an all-three level scorer.”

Makayla Timpson breaks Natasha Howard’s double-double record

It was a historic day for Timpson.

It was late in the third quarter when Timpson scored her 10th point. The Tucker Center erupted as she had already gathered 12 boards.

As she was heading to the bench, she hugged Wyckoff and received a standing ovation from the crowd, including from the alumni who were there for Alumni Weekend.

“It just felt great,” Timpson said.

“I’m just grateful for this moment. You know, (I) don’t want it to end, but just grateful for my team and my coaches, like they just encourage me each and every day, and I’m just grateful to do it.”

Timpson was already on pace to record a double-double after gathering nine rebounds in the first half. She finished the day with 10 points and 13 rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

What’s next for FSU basketball

FSU will have a week to prepare for a tough road test against No. 14 North Carolina (17-3, 5-2). The tipoff will be on Sunday at noon in the Carmichael Arena.

The Seminoles are 1-4 on the road this season after losing back-to-back to Standford and Cal last week.

This could be the Seminoles’ second signature victory, and it will also be their first win against a Top 25 team.
