No. 22 Louisville women’s basketball has had standout performances from its freshman group so far this season.
Guard Taj Roberts has scored in double figures in all but one game, earning ACC Freshman of the Week honors twice in the first month of the season. Fellow guard Imari Berry is one of the nation’s best 3-point shooters, making 52% of her shots. But with their third ranked opponent coming up, the Cardinals will need more consistency from their older players, too.
“You’re going to have, from freshmen, a game here or there that might not be their best,” Louisville coach Jeff Walz said. “But if I can get my upper classman to play like I know they can and they have in the past, I like where this team can go.”
Louisville is set to face No. 11 Oklahoma at 5 p.m. today in the second annual SEC/ACC Challenge.
It’ll be a reunion of sorts for veterans Olivia Cochran, Merissah Russell and Nyla Harris who will be playing against a former teammate in Payton Verhulst. The guard left Louisville during the 2022-23 season and transferred to OU where she is the team’s second-leading scorer with 13.4 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds per outing.
“We know that Payton likes to score the basketball, so you’ve got to make sure that you’re there on the catch trying to make it as difficult as you can,” Walz said. “She’s really done a nice job of passing the ball now. That’s one part of her game that I think has really grown and gotten better. … She still rebounds the ball well, which she did here her freshman year. So, it’s really going to be a fun game.”
Louisville is 2-0 against Oklahoma in the series and will look to keep the perfect record while picking up its first ranked win of the season.
