Latrell Wrightsell Jr. out for season: Update on injury for Alabama basketball starter

by

Alabama basketball guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles, head coach Nate Oats shared on Tuesday.

Over the weekend, Wrightsell exited the Crimson Tide’s game against Oregon in the Players Era Festival championship at the top of the second half. The returning Final Four starter fell to the floor after a 3-point attempt, writhing and groaning in pain before heading to the locker room with an apparent lower leg injury.

There was concern about Wrightsell’s Achilles following Saturday’s game. He was evaluated further upon the team’s return to Tuscaloosa from Las Vegas. As of Monday, the hyperlink to access Wrightsell’s stats for the 2024-25 season had been removed from the team’s “Cumulative Statistics” webpage.

Wrightsell averaged 11.5 points per game and led UA from the arc, shooting 42.2% for 19 treys on the year with five starts on the year.

Oats added that UA is looking at a medical redshirt for Wrightsell. Alabama currently has two redshirts on the roster in Pepperdine transfer Houston Mallette and freshman Naas Cunningham.

Before the season began, Wrightsell was benched with a lower leg injury until he was cleared to play on a minutes restriction against UNC-Asheville in the opener.

Staying healthy was a struggle for Wrightsell last year, too. After sustaining a head injury while defeating Texas A&M, he was out for two weeks, recovering in time to make the starting five for what would become season-ending loss to UConn.

Wrightsell took to Instagram to let the Crimson Tide know that he hasn’t lost hope yet, though.

“This one hurt…” Wrightsell wrote, encouraging fans to trust that he’ll return on “God’s Timing.”
