Lady Riders can’t get handle on Lady Mustangs, fall 53-27

by

Jan. 16—In Hulbert girls basketball’s second of four games, the offense couldn’t get flowing, and they lost to the Okay Mustangs Lady Mustangs for the second time this season.

The Lady Riders didn’t score over 10 points in any quarter and struggled to a 53-27 loss at home on Thursday, Jan. 16. With two more games coming in the next two days, the Lady Riders started the first of three in an offensive slump.

“I felt like the biggest factor of the game was that we didn’t shoot very well,” HHS head coach Joseph McClure said. “We turned it over and rushed some shots but we just couldn’t make shots throughout the game.”

Early in the game, the Lady Mustangs offense was clicking. The first quarter had the most buckets for both teams as they battled to open things up. Even though the quarter was the best-scoring for the Lady Riders, they were outpaced 21-9 to open things up.

After the Lady Mustangs’ thunderous start, the Lady Riders started to get a better handle on them defensively. The Lady Riders allowed an average of 10.6 points for the next three quarters.

“Positioning was better; they got some fast break points on turnovers and knowing what they were trying to do and implement the game plan we had from the start, just some fine-tuning,” McClure said.

HHS used that defense to outscore the Lady Mustangs 8-7 in the third quarter.

The Lady Riders defense improved, but on the offensive side of the ball, things didn’t get much better, as they scored just 12 points, allowing the Lady Mustangs to hang on for the win.

“It was 22-12 at one point and we stopped them a couple of times and had some open looks and didn’t hit after that they built a lead,” McClure said. “They are young, but they are a good team and their starting five has a lot of court time.”

Brooke Norton led the Lady Riders with 13 points. Sadie Chambers added five points, leaving her 32 points to her quest of the 1,000-point club.

The loss moves HHS record to 6-4 this season.

HHS is back in action at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17 at Oktaha.
