Feb. 6—MOULTRIE — Winning their last two games, the Lady Packers are currently 5-3 in region play, and 20-4 overall.

In the first of the two matches, played on Friday, the Lady Packers faced Valdosta.

The final score was 79-48.

Off to a bit of a slow start, the Lady Packers trailed behind by four points at the end of the first quarter.

By middle of the second quarter, the Lady Packers gained the lead and held it the remainder of the game.

The top shooter of the game was Amira Walters-Smith, with 23 points, five of which were 3-point shots.

Also with five successful 3-point shots was Jamya Moore, who got 19 points total; she was the next highest scoring Lady Packer.

Amareyia Knighton, Caylnn Singletary, D’Zeriyah Polite, Ameris Johnson and Nyleigha Knighton all had baskets as well in the game against Valdosta.

One way that the Lady Packers gained points was through bonuses, which they received in three of the four quarters.

In the third quarter, the way the Lady Packers received their bonus was from a block set by Johnson.

“They have been able to keep that mental toughness,” said head coach Rondesha Williams. “That attitude of never being satisfied.”

The next day, the Lady Packers had a home match against Lowndes, which they won 58-48.

It was fierce battle going all the way into the third quarter before the Lady Packers gained, and controlled, the lead.

Though the Lady Packers only got five points during the first quarter, the game tied going into halftime at 26.

During the second half, the Lady Packers played more fluently.

Both Knighton sisters, Johnson, Nacardia Robinson and Polite all instigated jump balls, while all those athletes plus Walters-Smith and Moore also controlled the net with rebounds.

Amareyia Knighton was the highest scoring Lady Packer with 20 points, followed by Walters-Smith with 19.

Also scoring were: Robinson, Polite, Moore and Nyleigha Knighton.

Of those Lady Packers, Walters-Smith, Moore and Amareyia Knighton were the only one to make a 3-point shot.

“We had a good week of basketball,” said Williams. “We need to keep this momentum.”

The Lady Packers’ next game is Feb. 9 at Colquitt County High School against Brooks County. The game begins at 6 p.m.
