Jan. 31—SHELBYVILLE — South Decatur and Edinburgh opened Sectional 60 at Southwestern (Shelby) Tuesday. The Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Lancers by 27 points during the regular season and did that two points better this time, knocking off Edinburgh 50-21 to advance to the sectional semifinal.
South improves to 14-10 on the season. Edinburgh ends the season 3-21. With the win, the Lady Cougars advance to face Jac-Cen-Del (18-5) in the 6 p.m. Friday semifinal. South defeated JCD during the regular season 43-38.
In the opener, South got off to a 6-0 start. Makayla Somers scored in the lane off the Molly Eden assist and Kiley Best followed with four straight points. Edinburgh’s Kyah Streeval scored the next four points to cut the deficit to two. South closed the quarter on another 6-0 run. Paige McQueen’s drive to the bucket started the spurt and Makayla Somers finished it with four straight points.
After one quarter, South led 12-4.
Makayla Somers kept the run going with the first three points of the second quarter. A free throw by Kenna Streeval got Edinburgh on the board. Four straight from Eden and a Brayley Sundal lay-up extended South’s advantage to 21-5.
After a bucket by Edinburgh’s Mia Dodson, Makayla Somers and Sundal had back-to-back buckets. Kyah Streeval’s bucket closed the first half with Edinburgh trailing the Lady Cougars 25-9.
Makayla Somers hit a free throw to open the third quarter for South. A McQueen bucket and Makayla Somers’ rebound bucket extended the lead to 30-9. Kenna Streeval got the Lady Lancers on the board in the third quarter with a 3-pointer.
A 3-pointer by Edinburgh’s Kinzie Purvis cut the deficit to 32-15. South closed the quarter on a 7-2 run. A Makayla Puckett free throw started the run and Makayla Somers ended the quarter with a bucket to put South up 39-17.
Edinburgh’s Purvis hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the fourth quarter. Best answered on the other end with a 3-pointer and the Lady Cougars closed the game with eight of the next nine points. Makayla Somers, McQueen, Best and Liz Bennett all scored for South as the Lady Cougars advanced with the 50-21 victory.
South was led by the double-double of Makayla Somers. She finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Best tallied nine points and three assists. McQueen scored eight points. Eden had six points, six rebounds and three assists. Sundal scored four points. Bennett and Taylor Somers (seven rebounds) both scored two points. Puckett added a free throw for one point.
Edinburgh got eight points from Kyah Streeval, six from Purvis, five from Kenna Streeval and two from Dodson.
