200 backstroke
Make it four Big Ten 200 back gold medals for Brendan Burns, which would be impressive if it wasn’t for the fact that he already has four (and counting) in the 200 fly.
Burns faced a test from a training partner, with Kai Van Westering pushing him the entire way. Burns touched in 1:39.50, well behind his meet record from last year (1:38.22). He was .24 ahead of Van Westering, holding off the junior’s charge coming home in 25.36. Burns was up four tenths at the 150-yard wall.
Third went to Northwestern’s David Gerchik. Fourth was Wisconsin’s Jake Newmark before two from Michigan.

Maybe the race of the meet: Bence Szabados juuuuuuuust got his hand to the wall first .01 seconds ahead of ahead of 50 free champ Taiko Torepe-Ormsby of Wisconsin. Szabados went 42.09, Torepe-Ormsby 42.10.
The race for bronze wasn’t boring either. Tomas Navikonis, the 200 free champ, was seventh at the halfway point but surged with the only sub-22 final 50 (21.80) to bronze in 42.22. Penn State’s Victor Baganha was fifth. Indiana went sixth, eighth and ninth.
