Now in the thick of conference play, the Oregon women’s basketball team has won each of its last two Big Ten games after dropping its first two and heads into its second conference road trip .500 in league play.
The Ducks (11-4, 2-2 Big Ten) have already equaled their overall win total and conference win total from a year ago and are looking forward to the unique challenges of preparing for new teams ahead of Penn State on Thursday and No. 9 Ohio State Sunday.
“This is kind of new, but we’ve collectively watched every game they’ve played this year,” Oregon coach Kelly Graves said of Big Ten Conference teams. “We end up knowing them and they know us about as well as you can. That’s what is going to make this a really fun season.”
Graves made his first trip as a coach to Illinois and Northwestern in late December, and now heads to University Park, Pennsylvania, for the first time Thursday to take on the Nittany Lions (9-6, 0-4 Big Ten).
Penn State has yet to win a Big Ten game after going 9-2 in nonconference play, with losses to Indiana, Minnesota, No. 23 Iowa and Nebraska.
For the Ducks, who defeated Northwestern on the road and then took down Wisconsin at home last week, the emphasis will be on their defense before yet another road trip.
“Everyone knows how hard this league is, so every single win matters,” guard Deja Kelly said. “But also just taking it one game at a time. That’s the biggest thing. Especially knowing that it’s going to be a battle and a dogfight every single night.”
