RUSSELL DORSEY: What’s going on, guys? Russell Dorsey, national MLB insider for Yahoo Sports here with you. We have a massive move here in Major League Baseball as the San Diego Padres are finalizing a deal for right-hander Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox.
Sources confirmed to Yahoo Sports. This is a massive move for the Padres. They’ve been looking for somebody to headline that rotation with the departure of 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner, Blake Snell.
Acquiring a guy like Cease, they can pencil him into the top of their rotation every fifth day. That allows a guy like Yu Dovish to slot back to number two. Joe Musgrove, Michael King so on and so forth. So a move that solidifies an area of weakness for the Padres and something to match that offense that they have still headlined by Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr, and Xander Bogaerts.
For the Chicago White Sox, they are a team that has been looking to rebuild for the last year, year and a half. At the deadline, they made a lot of moves. Dylan Cease was a guy that got a lot of calls last season at the trade deadline.
Was getting a lot of calls this off season, and his name had been heating up in trade conversations over the last couple of weeks. Now, Yahoo Sports reported last month that the New York Yankees had been keeping conversations open with the Chicago White Sox and with the news about Gerrit Cole’s elbow.
Those talks had begun to intensify over the last seven to 10 days, but it’s the San Diego Padres that come up big with a big time acquisition in Dylan Cease.
He is a guy that has two more full seasons of club control before he hits free agency, so a lot of value there for the Padres with them opening the season next week against the Dodgers.
