Janay Sanders scored a season-high 23 points, but the Gophers women’s basketball team fell 76-65 to Michigan State at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich., on Monday night.
Mallory Heyer added a double-double for Minnesota (14-8, 4-7 Big Ten), finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and teammate Sophie Hart had 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Amaya Battle recorded 10 assists for Minnesota, the third 10-assist game of her career and second this season.
The Spartans (17-5. 7-4) opened up a fairly close game with a dominant second-quarter performance, outscoring the Gophers 27-10 in the second session to take a 47-24 halftime lead. Minnesota outscored Michigan State 41-29 in the second half to claw its way back into the game.
The Gophers outrebounded the Spartans 42-35, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds and scoring eight second-chance points.
