The Yankees bullpen allowed four runs in the seventh inning and couldn’t come back, falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2.
Here are some key takeaways …
– Clarke Schmidt got the start and two quick outs before letting up a double to Jack Suwinski. The right-hander was issued an error on a pickoff attempt, allowing Suwinski to advance to third. Schmidt escaped the first unscathed by striking out Jake Lamb.
After getting through the second without allowing a hit, Schmidt gave up a solo home run to Jack Brannigan that put the Pirates up 1-0.
– Schmidt allowed a leadoff double in the top of the fourth, and after getting a groundout, he let up a single that ended his day. He finished after 58 pitches in 3.1 innings of work, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts.
– The Yanks managed just one hit the first time through the order, as Gleyber Torres doubled in the bottom of the first but was left stranded.
Torres recorded the team’s second hit of the night with a solo homer to tie the game up at 1-1.
– Ron Marinaccio walked Nick Gonzales with one out in the fifth, but Jose Trevino caught him stealing with a perfect throw to second base. Marinaccio struck out Suwinski to end the inning and keep it tied.
– LHP Anthony Misiewicz came in for relief in the seventh and allowed a ground-rule double to Jason Delay. Misiewicz gave up a one-out single to Brannigan that put the Pirates ahead, 2-1. The left-hander’s day didn’t get any better, as he allowed a three-run homer to Suwinski as Pittsburgh took a 5-1 lead.
– Everson Pereira picked up an RBI in the bottom of the ninth on a groundout to make it a 6-2 game.
– It was a tough night at the plate for most of New York’s starters. Alex Verdugo, Juan Soto, Anthony Rizzo, Anthony Volpe, Trent Grisham, and Trevino all went hitless.
