GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Wolfforth Frenship defeats OHS in District 2-6A opener

by

Jan. 3—The Wolfforth Frenship girls basketball team did more than enough in the second half to secure its district-opening win.

The Lady Tigers began District 2-6A play with a 67-36 win against Odessa High Friday at OHS Fieldhouse.

Frenship improved to 19-6 overall, 1-0 in District 2-6A while the Lady Bronchos fell to 9-15, 0-1.

The Lady Tigers’ lead was only nine points after the Lady Bronchos kept things close in the first half.

However, there was only so much Odessa High could do before Frenship took off in the second half and built a 20-point third quarter lead.

Jada Jackson had 21 points to lead the Lady Tigers while Addyson Middleton had 10 and Addisyn Bollinger had nine.

Odessa High was led in scoring by Joslyn Palma’s 11 while Alisia Galindo had seven.

“I thought we started off pretty well,” Wolfforth Frenship head coach Trent Hilliard said. “We stayed focused and started off with that 10-0 run to start the game. Then, we went to the bench a little bit and couldn’t keep up the momentum. We got in some foul trouble. But I was happy with the way we played in the second half. Anytime you can get a district win on the road, you have to be happy about that.”

Odessa High head coach Sherman Chew was not happy with the refs.

“We have a good basketball team,” Chew said. “If we had officials who knew how to call a game, then we’d win the game.”

Frenship built a 17-8 lead in the first quarter.

The Lady Tigers were limited in scoring a little bit more in the second quarter as OHS fought to take a 32-23 deficit in the final minute of the half.

The hosts were only down by nine at the break.

The third quarter would be a whole different story, however.

Frenship began the quarter on a promising note, scoring on a 3-pointer by Addisyn Bollinger.

Kedan Burch added an inside basket and the Lady Tigers had a 39-25 lead at the 3:45 mark.

Another field goal by the visitors, shortly after, gave them a 41-25 lead.

Jada Jackson was sent to the line where she made both free throws, giving the Lady Tigers a 43-25 advantage with 2:35 left.

Frenship’s Zosia Storey scored a layup to make it 45-25 with 1:36 left.

She would make a 3-pointer shortly after to extend Frenship’s lead.

A three-point play by the Lady Tigers then made it 51-25.

Frenship’s lead was 54-25 by the time the third quarter buzzer sounded.

It was 63-30 by the 3:47 mark in the fourth quarter.

Frenship remained well in control of the game and wouldn’t be denied its district-opening win.

Odessa High will next face Midland Legacy at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Midland.

Wolfforth Frenship will next face Permian at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Wolfforth.
