Feb. 13—OOLOGAH — There weren’t many free throws for either side, but Kailee Seaba made the most of her opportunities.
The 5-foot-10 sophomore ascended to double-double status from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds as Oologah clinched its fifth win in six games and third straight with a 43-20 decision against Sequoyah on Monday night.
Only five free throws were taken between the teams — all in the final period — with the Lady Mustangs shooting four of them and making three.
Seaba was their sole free-throw shooter, her first shot coming at the 5:55 mark of the fourth. She split her first two but made her final pair to reach double figures and achieve a double-double, giving Oologah at 39-15 lead before leaving the game with 5:03 remaining.
Offense was at a premium in the first half as Oologah led 17-10 at halftime behind six points and six rebounds from Seaba.
Cylie Bronson and Matison Kruis put the Lady Eagles ahead 4-0 early on, but the Lady Mustangs answered with an 11-0 run that saw five players contribute to the scoring effort. The teams evenly split the next 12 points, but 3-pointers from Kruis and Bronson gave Sequoyah some momentum going into the half.
Allie Charloe extended Oologah’s lead to 19-10 less than a minute into the third quarter with a fast-break layup off a steal and assist from Kalley Hogue, but the Lady Eagles still had some fight in them.
Ava Springer answered quickly with a 3-pointer from the left corner, and just moments later she followed up with an offensive rebound and putback after Landry Roland stripped Seaba to start a fast-break opportunity. Suddenly, Sequoyah was down only four with 6:21 remaining in the period.
Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, who committed 24 turnovers in the loss, that would be their last points for quite some time.
The Lady Mustangs responded with a 20-0 run to take a 39-15 lead as Macey Calico led the surge with eight points — including two 3-pointers — while Seaba, Karsyn Littlepage and Hogue added five, four and three points, respectively. Sequoyah didn’t scored again until a Roland putback with 4:39 remaining in the fourth, marking 9:42 between scores.
Calico tied Seaba with 11 points while also finishing with two rebounds, and Littlepage (six points, four rebounds) and Hogue (five points, five rebounds) had notable performances as well for Oologah.
However, the Lady Eagles at least closed the game on a positive note with a 3-pointer from Lexis Breshears at the 1:07 mark, which served as the final basket of the game.
Kruis, Bronson and Springer each scored five points to co-lead Sequoyah in scoring. Kruis set herself apart, though, with a game-high 12 rebounds, while Bronson and Springer grabbed three and one, respectively.
Despite that commendable effort on the boards by the 5-11 junior, the Lady Mustangs outrebounded the Lady Eagles 36-28 with a 15-10 edge on the offensive glass.
Both teams now head to the Class 4A playoffs, with Oologah traveling to Skiatook for the Area I District 8 championship at 6 p.m. Friday while Sequoyah hosts Berryhill in Area III District 6 at 6 p.m. Saturday.
